Crowne Range Photo shoot

6th May 2016

Our editor took a wee cruise over the country's highest sealed highway. He'll share his ride in the next issue.. we got some great pics too

New Zealand may lack the huge alpine climbs of Europe, but there are a couple that give Kiwi’s a taste of climbing huge European peaks. Our editor John McKenzie set out to climb a road he has had on his list of must do’s for quite some time, the country’s highest sealed State Highway, over the Crowne Range in Central Otago.

'Mountains are there to be climbed, isn’t that what mountain climbers say? What about mountains with sealed roads? They also lie there, just beckoning to be challenged, to be ridden, climbed and to be ‘knocked off.’The Crown Range that lies between Queenstown and Wanaka has the highest sealed State Highway in New Zealand. It reaches an altitude of 1076 metres and with its impressive views was a road I have always wanted to tick off the list.'
